Released on July 23, 2013, through Red Cord Records.
So this album has been out for a while now, but I just started doing album reviews and am trying to catch up on all the best Christian metal albums released up until now so I can just do new albums and not die trying to crank out album reviews!
I love this album, it would definitely be in my top albums list, along with other albums by Phinehas!
There are many things to talk about in this review, the first thing is the lyrics.
The lyrical content in this album is very aggressive towards religious leaders in the church and basically modern day Pharisees. This is one of the things I love about Phinehas, cause I have had some nasty encounters with these religious people who want to shove laws down your throat and forget that the very fulfillment of the law as Jesus said was Love. This is not what all the lyrics are about but it is sort of an ongoing theme with Phinehas' lyrics and thought it was worth mentioning.
I want to also talk about the sick guitar riffs in this album. These days not many metalcore bands write riffs, they just breakdown, and it makes me breakdown mentally! So when a Christian metalcore band can actually riff and write some really sick riffs at that it really catches my attention!
In this album the riffs have a sort of southern metal feel to them like I don't really know how to explain southern metal for those of you that don't know, it just is groovy in a way and you just know it when you hear it. The cool thing is they have that southern metal groove but also still has the more fast-paced modern progressive metalcore sound, which makes it very interesting and some serious ear candy for sure! One of my favorite riffs would be the intro riff for that song Twisted! It's so fast paced and I don't know what it is that makes me like it so much but it's awesome!
Another great thing on top of all the great riffs is their songs don't consist of just breakdowns, but when there is a breakdown it hits SO HARD I really want to punch something, I would say someone but I'm a Christian. (haha)
The best thing about this album by far though, I would say is the amazing guitar solos! Nothing is better than a metal band that actually writes solos!!! Can I get an amen????
My favorite solo was from the song, "The Blessing and the Curse." It is an amazing solo and the way it starts out sounds like an older style heavy metal solo then does some more modern progressive things like finger tapping.
The last thing I want to say is the vocalist Saan Mcculloch is an amazing vocalist, he has some sick heavy screams and is a great singer (WITHOUT AUTOTUNE!!!) his voice doesn't have to be autotuned and processed like modern-day popular artists who think their tough crap cause they can mock each other like children. Sorry guys, just don't get me started on pop music or I will go ballistic!
Overall this is a great album, the elements that we talked about are what make it so great, actual thought and a message go into the lyrics, it isn't some stupid crap that a child could write like, "smoke weed every day."(that's so stupid I can't even explain how stupid it is)
There is a lot of talent and skill that goes into music and writing. (it isn't some stupidly simple drum loop with a synth looping as well no more than a 3 or 4 chord progression)
The final element is the musicianship and guitar solos that make it such a great sounding metal album.
Be sure to go and support Phinehas!
